How Tall Can a Fence Be in Connecticut?
One of the first questions to settle before you build is how tall your fence can be. The answer is not the same for every part of your yard. Here is a simple guide to fence height rules in Connecticut so you can plan your project with confidence.
Front yard vs. back yard
Most Connecticut towns treat the front yard and the back yard differently when it comes to fence height.
Back yard. You can usually go up to six feet. This is the standard height for a privacy fence. Six feet is tall enough to block the view from a neighbor's yard while you are standing. It gives you real privacy for your patio, pool, or outdoor living space.
Front yard. The limit is usually lower, often around three to four feet. Towns keep front yard fences shorter so they do not block sight lines along the street. Drivers need to see pedestrians and other cars, and a tall fence on a corner lot can create a blind spot.
Side yard. Rules for side yards vary by town. In some towns, the side yard follows the back yard rules. In others, the part of the side yard that is in front of the house follows the front yard rules. You need to check your town's zoning code to be sure.
Why height limits exist
Fence height limits serve a few purposes:
Safety. Tall fences near roads and intersections can block a driver's view. Towns set limits to keep sight lines clear and prevent accidents. Corner lots often have even stricter rules for this reason.
Neighborhood character. Towns want to keep a consistent look along their streets. A ten-foot wall in a row of open front yards would look out of place and could lower property values nearby.
Neighbor relations. A fence that is too tall can block sunlight or feel like a wall closing in. Height limits keep things fair and reduce disputes between neighbors.
Light and air. Some towns factor in how a tall fence affects sunlight reaching a neighbor's yard or windows. This is more common in densely built areas where houses sit close together.
Common fence heights and what they do
Here is a quick guide to what each height gives you:
Three feet. A decorative border fence. It marks your property line and keeps small dogs in the yard, but it does not block any views. This is the most common choice for front yards.
Four feet. The standard front yard fence and the minimum height for most pool fences in Connecticut. It keeps kids and pets contained and adds curb appeal without feeling closed off.
Five feet. A step up in privacy. Most people cannot easily see over a five-foot fence, but it still lets some light and air through. Good for side yards or areas where six feet feels like too much.
Six feet. Full privacy. This is the go-to height for back yard fences. You can sit on your patio, use your pool, or eat dinner outside without anyone looking in. Most towns allow six feet in the back yard without a variance.
Over six feet. Some situations call for a taller fence, like along a busy road or a commercial property line. If you need more than six feet, you will usually need a variance from the town. The process involves a hearing and approval from the zoning board.
Pool fence rules in Connecticut
Pool fences have their own set of rules that are separate from general fence height limits. Connecticut follows the International Residential Code for pool barriers:
Minimum height. A pool fence must be at least 48 inches (four feet) tall. This applies to any pool that is 24 inches or more deep, including above-ground pools.
Gate rules. The gate must be self-closing and self-latching. The latch must be on the pool side of the gate and at least 54 inches from the ground so small children cannot reach it.
No climbable features. The fence should not have horizontal rails, decorative patterns, or other features that a child could use as a foothold to climb over.
These rules exist to prevent drowning, the leading cause of accidental death for young children. Towns enforce them strictly. If you are building or replacing a pool fence, make sure it meets all of these requirements. See our pool fence installation page for more.
How to find your town's specific rules
Every Connecticut town has its own zoning regulations. Here is how to find the rules for your town:
Check the town website. Most towns post their zoning regulations online. Look for the section on fences, walls, and hedges.
Call the building department. A quick phone call is the fastest way to get a clear answer. Tell them where your property is and what kind of fence you want. They will tell you the height limit and any other rules.
Visit town hall. If you want to see the full code and ask questions in person, stop by the zoning or building department. They can walk you through the rules for your specific lot.
Ask your fence installer. A good local fence company knows the rules in the towns they serve. We work in New Britain and the surrounding towns every week, so we know the codes and can make sure your fence meets them.
What if you need a taller fence?
If the standard height limit does not work for your situation, you can apply for a variance. This is a formal request to build something that does not meet the zoning rules. You will need to explain why you need the extra height and attend a hearing before the zoning board.
Common reasons for a variance include noise from a nearby road, an unusual lot shape, or a commercial property next door. Variances are not guaranteed, and the process can take several weeks.
