Wood vs. Vinyl Fence: Which Is Right for Your Yard?

When people want a private backyard, they almost always come down to two choices: wood or vinyl. Both fully block the view. Both look great. The right one for you comes down to cost, looks, and how much upkeep you want to do. Here is an honest comparison from a fence installer who works with both every week.

Wood fence: warm and classic

A wood fence has a natural look that fits almost any home. You can stain it any color or let it age to a natural gray. It is the most popular choice for a reason: it looks great and costs less up front.

What you pay. Wood fences run about $25 to $50 per linear foot installed. The exact price depends on the wood species, the height, and the style. Pressure-treated pine is the most affordable. Cedar costs more but resists rot better and smells great when it is new.

How it looks. Nothing matches the warmth of real wood. A fresh-stained cedar fence can make a backyard feel like a retreat. You can also customize it more easily. Board-on-board, dog-ear, flat-top, lattice-top: the options are wide open.

The upkeep. This is where wood asks more of you. A wood fence needs a coat of stain or sealer every two to four years to look its best and last. Without it, the wood dries out, cracks, and starts to rot. In Connecticut, wet springs and cold winters speed up the wear. You will also need to replace a board here and there over the years. A few boards every decade is normal. See our wood fence installation page for more details.

How long it lasts. A well-maintained wood fence lasts 15 to 20 years or more. Without maintenance, you might get 10 years before it starts to lean and rot.

Vinyl fence: clean and easy

Vinyl (also called PVC) fences are made from a tough plastic that does not rot, rust, or need paint. They have come a long way from the flimsy white panels of 20 years ago. Modern vinyl is thick, strong, and comes in several colors and styles.

What you pay. Vinyl fences run about $30 to $60 per linear foot installed. The up-front cost is higher than wood, but the total cost over the life of the fence is often lower because there is no staining, sealing, or board replacement.

How it looks. Vinyl gives you a clean, uniform look. Most people go with white, tan, or gray. Some newer products have a wood-grain texture that looks close to real wood from a few feet away. The look stays consistent year after year because the color runs all the way through the material.

The upkeep. This is vinyl's biggest advantage. There is almost nothing to do. Once in a while, you can spray it with a hose to knock off dirt and pollen. That is it. No staining. No painting. No replacing boards. Check out our vinyl fence installation page for more.

How long it lasts. A good vinyl fence lasts 20 to 30 years or more. The material does not rot, warp, or get eaten by insects. It can crack in extreme cold if hit hard, but that is rare.

Side by side comparison

Here is a quick summary:

Cost up front: Wood wins. It costs less to install.

Cost over time: Vinyl wins. No maintenance costs add up over the years.

Look: A tie. Wood has a natural warmth. Vinyl has a clean, uniform look. It comes down to what you like.

Upkeep: Vinyl wins. Wood needs staining every few years and occasional board replacement.

Lifespan: Vinyl wins. It lasts 20 to 30 years vs. 15 to 20 for wood.

Customization: Wood wins. You can cut, shape, stain, and paint it any way you want. Vinyl comes in set styles and colors.

Strength: A tie. Both hold up well in normal conditions. Wood can splinter. Vinyl can crack in extreme cold. Both handle Connecticut weather just fine when installed right.

Which one fits your situation?

Here are a few questions that usually make the choice clear:

Do you want low maintenance? Pick vinyl. If you do not want to stain, seal, or fix boards, vinyl gives you a fence you can forget about.

Do you want a natural, custom look? Pick wood. If you love the look of real wood and do not mind spending a weekend staining every few years, wood is the way to go.

Are you on a tight budget right now? Pick wood. The lower up-front cost makes it easier to fit into a budget. Just plan for maintenance costs down the road.

Are you planning to sell soon? Either works. Both add value and curb appeal. Vinyl is a stronger selling point for buyers who do not want yard work.

What about other materials?

If neither wood nor vinyl feels right, you have other options. Chain link is the most affordable, but it does not give you privacy. Aluminum gives you a decorative, open look that works well for front yards and pool areas. We install all of these and can help you pick the best fit.
